Individualism vs. Collectivism

You have 2 extra days for this post since I posted it late. It is due: SUNDAY by 5 p.m. 

In class, we are about to begin reading Ayn Rand's, Anthem. It is a story of the individual's struggle against collectivism, against the idea that society has the right to direct each person's life for the benefit of all.

Collectivism and individualism are central themes in the book. Read the definitions of each below. Then present scenarios for each. Afterwards, explain which you think is better and why.

Individualism: A social theory favoring freedom of action for individuals over collective or state control. The belief that the needs of each person are more important than the needs of the whole society or group.

Collectivism: The sociopolitical ideology that bases itself on the belief that all humans must depend on one another.

1. Give an example of a country that practices individualism as a political ideology. Present a scenario where individualism might be a good idea. Why do you think so?
2. Give an example of a country that practices collectivism as a political ideology. Present a scenario where collectivism might be a good idea. Why do you think so?
